Straight answer

The text in this PDF cannot be selected or searched

Every page of a Scribd document is drawn as a picture, so a converted document is a picture of a document. That is true of every tool that converts Scribd documents, and most of them will not tell you until you have already downloaded the file.

What actually happens when a document is converted

Scribd does not put a document on the page as text you can select. It puts a viewer there, and the viewer draws each page. What arrives in your browser is closer to a set of images than to a document.

So a converter has nothing to copy. The best it can do is take a high-resolution picture of each page, in order, and put those pictures into a PDF. That is exactly what happens here: every page is captured at full width and assembled into one file.

The result is a PDF you can read, print, annotate and archive, and one whose words you cannot highlight, search or copy out of.

Why we are not adding a text layer

A text layer has to come from somewhere. The two possible sources are the original file Scribd uploaded, and the page itself. Scribd does not hand either one over to a converter, and inventing the words from the picture is optical character recognition.

We do not run OCR, deliberately. It is slow, it is not free, and on a photographed or badly scanned page it gets things wrong in ways that are hard to notice and easy to be misled by — a page of legal text with a misread number in it is worse than a page with no text at all, because it looks right.

If you are handling a document where a wrong word matters, a guessed text layer is a liability, not a feature.

What to do instead

There are three honest options, in the order worth trying.

1. Run the PDF through OCR

This is what the page images are good for. Any OCR tool will turn them back into searchable text, and because the pages here are captured at high resolution the result is usually good. Search for "OCR PDF" and pick one that shows you the text before you save it, so you can check it.

2. Find the original file

If a document was ever uploaded as a real PDF, an EPUB or a Word file, that version has real text in it. Authors often upload several formats, and Scribd's own page sometimes lists them. This is the only route that gives you text which is exactly what the author wrote.

3. Select and copy from the Scribd page itself

If the document is text-first, some of it can be selected in the browser and copied out. It is slow and it loses its structure, and it only works where the text is real text rather than a picture — which is the same condition this whole page is about.

What the file is genuinely good for

Reading offline, printing, filing, and keeping something that will still open in ten years. A page rendered at full width and assembled in order is a faithful record of the document, and it does not rot the way a link does.

If you need a document you can search, this is the wrong tool and we would rather say so than have you download a two-megabyte file and work that out yourself.

Still worth having a copy

A picture of every page, in order, with no watermark and no account.
